Object History

This cheeky nude, wearing nothing but her 1930s heels, has followed me for some time. Unlike nearly all the Steven Spurriers in the gallery collection, this one I remember from my first days in the business. My first boss, John Noott, had a real soft spot for Spurrier and this sat in his own collection before it sold at Olympia in the 1990s. It popped up in Christies some years later and I bought it to complement the drawings we acquired from the artist’s estate. It hasn’t had much exposure to the market as I’ve always had a mind to keep it, still I hear a familiar refrain ringing in my head, ‘everything’s for sale’!
