Object Description
Italian oil painting of Venice in giltwood frame
Italian, 19th Century
Frame: Height 60cm, width 75cm, depth 5cm
Canvas: Height 46cm, width 61cm
The painting portrays a scene along a Venetian canal, with a church visible in the distance and palaces and other buildings along the right-hand side. Groups of people mingle with one another, their attentions focused on the boats docked by the canal side. The manner of execution is adept, typical of works of this type: so-called vedute, or views, of Venice were popular souvenirs for well-to-do travellers during the 18th and 19th Centuries. The work, contained in a giltwood frame, is monogrammed lower right ‘A.H.’
