Object Description

John Farnham was the ‘boy next door’ and his illustrious career began in the 1960’s with him being introduced to sculpture by his neighbour Henry Moore. At a young age John became Moore’s assistant and through this developed and mastered his own style, observing as well the practices of Moore assistants Anthony Caro, Phillip King and Isaac Witkin. While having worked at the Henry Moore Foundation for many decades John has also run his own studios in Hertfordshire where he works in bronze, stone and wood.

Inspired by extensive worldwide travel John has combined the influences from his time with Moore with research into ancient and modern cultures producing a varied and interesting range of work and styles. He has exhibited extensively both in the UK and abroad and has worked as Artist in Residence in many notable Art learning institutions. He has carried out many commissions and his work is held in both private and public collections around the world.

This delightful small bronze work titled Head of Steps is mounted on a black round polished slate base and is of circular shape with rising steps carved into the body of the work. The sculpture is supported to one side with hollowed out legs reminiscent of many of the forms produced by Moore with the body combining heightened polished areas contrasting against recessed textured sections. One side has a Chinese Yin and Yang pattern. The bronze is signed Farnham to the lower edge and marked 3/7 being one from a limited edition of 7.

One of several John Farnham pieces we will be offering.
