Object Description
Kashan woven wool carpet of geometric floral design
Persian, Early 20th Century
Length 396cm, width 293cm
Showcasing detailing, this exquisite large Persian carpet pays homage to the age-old practice of rug-making in Kashan. This masterfully constructed piece of artistry reflects a style that is quintessential to carpets originating from the famed Iranian city.
A visually compelling, radiant, red-grounded central panel serves as the carpet’s heart, graced with an array of diverse botanical and foliage motifs, neatly organized in a concentric manner. A solitary floral design claims the position of a symmetrical fulcrum, setting the tone for the overall arrangement.
The intricate array of motifs in this central space includes not just life-like floral representations but also conventionally stylized elements iconic to Persian rugmaking. Rosettes, palmettes, and boteh motifs, which are reminiscent of lotus flowers, all contribute to the carpet’s unique visual narrative. These motifs are skillfully interlaced using delicate hues of rose, off-white, cerise, azure, and green, which result in a truly striking appearance.
A sturdy frame of seven friezes, all adorned with floral designs, encloses the central panel. This composition, with the broadest frieze positioned centrally, is a characteristic feature of Kashan carpets. These friezes are teeming with miniature floral designs in a colour palette echoing that of the central panel. However, the most expansive frieze introduces a contrast with its deep navy-blue background, sharply encapsulating and highlighting the vibrant red of the carpet’s core.
This traditional Persian carpet is a visual feast, enticing immediate admiration at first glance. Yet, the allure lies beyond the immediate, in the intricate detailing that beckons a longer, meditative gaze. This carpet promises to add a vibrant splash of colour to any room and imbue it with cultural allure.
