Object Description

A Fine Early 18th century red and black faux tortoiseshell longcase clock with exquisite gilt lacquer front, the long door decorated in a classic Japanese garden scene the caddy top surmounted by two gold, gesso covered, wooden finials. 12″ arched dial brass dial with finely matted centre,subsidiary seconds dial, and square box date aperture above the six o’ clock position, with blued cut steel hands.

The good quality 8 day movement with 5 ringed and knopped pillars.

Thomas Cartwright is recorded born 1679 apprenticed to Christopher Gould in 1693, started taking his own apprentices in 1705 and died in 1741. Working in watches, and longcase clocks, signed “Thomas Cartwright London”, A very good early maker who was CLOCKMAKER TO QUEEN ANNE AND GEORGE 1ST.
