Object Description

Antique Senneh rugs hail from the Kurdish weaving centres around modern-day Sanandaj in Northwest Persia, where, from the 17th through 19th centuries, master weavers perfected a virtually unrivaled standard of finesse and artistic expression. They represent relics of an era defined by unmatched craftsmanship and creativity, much coveted in the market today.

This early example, in an unusually large format, features an all-over Herati, or Mahi (meaning, ‘fish’) design, drawn from earlier 17th Century Safavid weavings, executed in an understated monochrome palette of ivory and steel blue, framed by a dozen artistic borders;. A rare piece with a crisp clarity in its design, owing to the skill of its weavers. One especially attractive feature is the uniformity in colour across the central field and the borders, rather than the stark contrast typically seen in pieces of its type, lending the work a feeling a space and balance.

Despite its age, this carpet is in very good condition for every day use, with all original outer borders intact – it’s organic dyes have taken on a wonderful, delicate patina.

A timeless piece, this carpet feels at once rich and subdued, suitable for a wide variety of interiors.

We strongly recommend viewing this piece in person, to fully appreciate the depth and complexity of its dyes – we can arrange this at our North London studio-showroom, or in situ at your location, anywhere in the UK.
