Large 19th Century Ziegler Mahal Carpet

Ziegler Mahal carpets were originally commissioned in Persia for the Western market during the late 19th Century, to complement Western furnishing tastes, quickly becoming popular across the UK and Europe, thanks to their unique, grand scale drawings, quiet formality, and understated colours, which continue to make them highly sought-after additions to modern homes today, thanks to their ability to unite both classic and contemporary elements in a room.
This wonderful early example showcases a grand-scale design, with large palmettes creatively repeated in a wide variety of colours, including sky blue, ivory, various shades of green and tan, across a soft terracotta field, framed by a simple grey-toned border of great proportions. All the vegetable-dyed colours in this carpet have gracefully aged, and have a warm, subdued hue which lends the piece a real sense of charm and character.
This 19th Century Ziegler Mahal carpet has had some age-related restoration, done to a high standard, though is in very good practical condition for everyday use. It still retains its outer plain borders on all four sides.
