Jerusalem, Late 19th Century

This exceptional piece of religious art is a large-scale diorama of the Last Supper, based on Leonardo da Vinci’s painting on the same theme. During the 18th and 19th centuries, such objects were highly popular souvenirs following a religious pilgrimage to Jerusalem. They hold specific historical significance on account of their origins: these icons were frequently made by Jewish, Muslim, and Christian craftsmen, working together in a remarkable cross-religious collaboration.

The icon is primarily crafted from mother of pearl, which was widely used in precious objects such as these on account of its durability and iridescence. The central scene is of the Last Supper, with Jesus and his 12 disciples seated behind a long table. The perspective and depth achieved are remarkable, via the receding diagonal bands of alternating mother of pearl and abalone that make up the surrounding walls.

The scene sits within an elaborate frame mother of pearl frame, carved, engraved, and pierced with arabesque and foliate designs. Further religious imagery adorns the frame: the crown is carved with a representation of the resurrection, which is flanked by roundels depicting the Annunciation and the Baptism. The four outer corners also feature roundels that depict the four Evangelists.

The composition is mounted onto an olive wood backing, and the entire piece is fixed within an elegant wooden case with a glass front.

Imbued with historical significance, this incredible piece is an extraordinary example of the religious artworks and souvenirs being made in Jerusalem at the time.
