Large American Orientalist oil painting of a courtyard by F. A. Bridgman
American, c. 1900
Canvas: Height 69cm, width 91cm
Frame: Height 95cm, width 108cm, depth 8.5cm

Wonderfully painted by the renowned American artist, Frederick Arthur Bridgman (1847-1928), this artwork depicts a charming scene set in a Middle Eastern courtyard.

Using a striking palette of bold colors, this painting features a pair of noble horses adorned with opulent saddles in the foreground. The vibrant green and yellow accents of one saddle stand out against the horse’s white coat, creating an eye-catching contrast. Seated proudly on the brown horse is a male rider, whose upright posture and richly colored attire—including a red jacket and shoes matching the detailing on his horse—suggest his prominence.

A charming young girl stands at the center of the scene with her loyal dog, her gaze drawn towards the stately horses. Behind her are three women dressed in lighter tones, painted in a delicate yet striking manner. Though they appear engaged in conversation, two of them also glance toward the horses, reinforcing their prominence in the composition.

Surrounding the protagonists is classic Middle Eastern architecture, with archways and niches that provide depth, leading the eye to more distant parts of the scene. Bridgman complements the beige buildings with lush green foliage, adding vibrancy to the background.

Frederick Arthur Bridgman, originally from Alabama, was greatly influenced by his extensive travels through Egypt, Algeria, and other parts of North Africa. These journeys profoundly shaped his work, as showcased in this stunning painting from Mayfair Gallery’s collection.

A carved giltwood frame surrounds the painting which is signed “F. A. Bridgman” in the lower right corner.

Bridgman’s exceptional skill is on full display in this piece, making it a remarkable addition to the appropriate interior.
