Object Description

Large antique bronze animalier sculpture of a camel by Romanelli
Italian/ American, Early 20th Century
Height 75cm, width 101cm, depth 25cm

This finely cast bronze of a camel by Carlo Alfredo Romanelli (Italian, 1872–1947) captures both the rugged strength of the desert animal and the late 19th-century European fascination with Orientalist subjects.

Born in Florence into a prominent family of sculptors, Romanelli trained in Italy before establishing an international career. He arrived in the United States in 1902, working extensively in Chicago, where he engaged with the dynamic artistic community and helped meet the growing demand for high-quality bronzes inspired by European-trained models. Later, he relocated to Los Angeles in 1914 and subsequently to Detroit, collaborating with foundries influenced by Florentine bronze-casting traditions, which played a key role in introducing European figurative sculpture into American collections at the turn of the century.
Native to Central Asia, the Bactrian camel has long been emblematic of the Silk Road and the extensive trade networks connecting East and West. In art, the species symbolizes endurance, patience, and adaptability, while also evoking commerce, travel, and cultural exchange. During the 19th century, European artists embraced the camel as a powerful Orientalist motif, conjuring images of distant steppes, long caravans, and an imagined world of timeless journeys.

What sets this sculpture apart is Romanelli’s masterful treatment of form and surface. While firmly rooted in the naturalist tradition of animalier sculpture, the piece exhibits a lively, tactile modelling reminiscent of Impressionist sensibilities, emphasizing texture and movement over polished perfection. It balances academic skill and Florentine craftsmanship with a keen sensitivity to the animal’s spirit, capturing both its presence and personality.

The base is signed “Romanelli Sculptor” and “Florentine Brotherhood Foundry Chicago Ill.”

The poised stance, intricate detailing, and textured surface convey the camel’s quiet strength and noble calm, making this work a distinguished example of both Romanelli’s artistry and early 20th century animalier bronze sculpture.
