Object Description

An enormous, beautiful and richly coloured antique Fereghan carpet woven in the last 1/4 of the 19th century.  Over 140 years old this exceptional decorative carpet is in wonderful pile, condition is very smart indeed with original ends showing, with minimal losses.  A few tiny areas of lower pile, but in general it is quite remarkable throughout.  Subtle yellow flowers with pale blues, famous Fereghan purple/brown dyes used in the border on a deep blue main background.  If placed in a drawing room or dining room for example it would look quite breathtaking!

We have offered our home visit service since 1990, travelling all over the UK and Europe.  Please request a home visit from us to view this oversize antique Fereghan carpet in-situ.

Object History

Since the 18th century, Fereghan carpets come from the area between Arak and Kashan in Western Persia.  Fereghan carpets are generally one of two types, the first being a full field decoration of floral motifs based on Persian designs, most commonly with the geometric ‘Herati’ design.  The second has a full medallion, usually with a contrasting colour, the edge of which is surrounded by a zig zag or jagged border. The dyes have mellowed beautifully over the last 100 plus years, we can also see the original 5 borders are showing on this carpet.
