This impressive antique combines a beautifully sculpted bronze lamp with a later mahogany pedestal, creating a statement of elegance and craftsmanship. The rectangular pedestal, with its panelled sides, serves as a complementary base, enhancing the rich tones of the patinated bronze while adding a sense of stature to the overall design.
Atop the pedestal, the lamp features a semi-clad female figure, masterfully sculpted from bronze. Her flowing drapery clings to her form as she steps forward gracefully on one leg, arms raised high above her head. She holds three delicate foliate branches that serve as light fittings, one of which is adorned with a small swallow, blending classical themes with elements of nature. This interplay between the idealised human form and the natural world evokes a sense of harmony and beauty.
The bronze figure is mounted on a naturalistic base, which sits on a moulded black marble plinth, providing a contrast of materials and textures. The combination of smooth black marble, rich mahogany, and patinated bronze adds depth and visual interest to the piece.
Signed “L. Grégoire” on the front of the bronze base, the sculpture is the work of Jean-Louis Grégoire (1840-1890), a renowned French sculptor known for his Academic-style works. Grégoire frequently exhibited at the Paris Salon, and his works often featured classical figures rendered with exquisite detail and grace. The back of the base bears the retailer’s mark: ‘BY APPOINTMENT TO THE QUEEN. BELLMAN, IVY & CARTER, NEW BOND ST, LONDON, MADE IN FRANCE,.
The intricate craftsmanship and harmonious blend of materials make this sculptural lamp an outstanding example of 19th-century decorative art.
