Object Description

Large Antique Heriz Carpet, c. 1880
5.22 x 3.70 m

19th Century Heriz works represent some of the rarest and most sought-after Persian carpets, best known for the originality of their designs – woven in Persia’s mountainous North-West, these pieces incorporate many of the bold, geometric motifs usually seen in Caucasian rugs, rather than the intricate floral patterns common to more Classical Persian carpets, though with the same high-quality weaves, clarity of drawing, and rich vegetable dyes, giving them the versitility to suit either a classic or contemporary space.

This early Heriz carpet, dating to the 19th Century, is a prime example of its type, featuring a bold, graphic drawing and a wide palette of natural, gracefully aged vegetable-dyed colours, including sky blue, ivory, soft tan and sage green hues – the artist has employed a simple, restrained design in the central field, framed by a wide, decorative border, with a subtle variation in tone which lends the work a great sense of depth and character.

In very good condition for everyday use, maintaining its borders on all sides, though with some minor aged-related restoration, finished to a high standard.

A handsome piece, with a tribal charm and artistry that would add personality to any setting.
