Object Description
Large Antique Kashan Carpet, c. 1890-1910
6.26 x 4.16 metres
This very large Kashan carpet has an artistic overall design. The muted, pinky-red field has a pleasant abrash (colour variation) which adds great depth and richness to the monochrome drawing which is framed by a wide, soft green border.
The city of Kashan, among the best-known and highly-ranked Persian rug-weaving centers, first rose to prominence in the 16th Century, under the Safavid Dynasty. These workshops earned a reputation for producing many of the most highly sought-after rugs of the Classical period and continued their work into the early 20th Century.
This Kashan carpet is in very good practical condition for everyday use, still retaining all its borders and fringes on all sides.
A stylish example with subtle colours, rare in this large format.
