Executed in 1894 by the artist E. Jeen, this richly detailed oil painting offers a vivid portrayal of life in a Middle Eastern city, capturing the charm and character of Orientalist themes that were highly sought after during the late 19th century.
The composition is anchored by a striking mosque, its towering minaret and high domes rising above surrounding buildings, which are rendered in gentle pastel tones. These soft pinks, blues, and creams introduce a vibrant warmth to the otherwise subdued setting. On the right-hand side, a series of distant architectural forms are painted in faded tones, creating a sense of perspective and atmospheric depth.
In the bustling foreground, the narrow-cobbled street is animated by various figures. Some rest beneath a canopy in the shade, while others carry baskets of fruit or clay jugs atop their heads, moving along the alley toward the open cityscape in the distance.
