Object Description
Large antique painted ceramic equestrian plaque
French, 19th Century
Plaque: Height 20cm, width 66cm
Frame: Height 41cm, width 86cm, depth 6cm
This charming ceramic plaque is significantly large for works of this type, delicately painted with six horses in a naturalistic style. Great attention to detail has been paid to the expressions of the horses and the colours of their coats, which shine with delicately added highlights and shadows. The horses are set against a sky backdrop, and lean over the low hedge in the foreground of the composition.
The plaque is set within a gilt and ebonised wood frame and is indistinctly marked on the reverse in multiple places, including ’19.7’ and ‘HL’.
With horses long famed for symbolising nobility and beauty, this refined porcelain plaque wows with its sensitive equestrian subject and would be an excellent piece in both a traditional as well as a contemporary interior.
