Mercury

Mercury is the Roman god of shopkeepers and merchants, travellers and transporters of goods, and thieves and tricksters.

He is commonly identified with the Greek Hermes, the fleet-footed messenger of the gods.

Artists over the years have borrowed attributes of Hermes and portrayed Mercury wearing winged sandals or a winged cap and carrying a caduceus (staff).

In this depiction wings are displayed on Mercury’s ankles while he sits on a rock, almost as if he is waiting for something.

Object Condition

Good structural condition. Small losses and surface marks.
