Object Description
Large Antique Tabriz Carpet, 1st Quarter 20th Century
5.45 x 3.57 m
The city of Tabriz in Northwest Persia has long been known as a major centre of fine rug weaving, with a tradition stretching back at least as far as the 14th Century, producing elaborate pieces for the royal courts. Antique Tabriz carpets are distinguished by their tight weaves and remarkable adherence to the traditions of Classical Persian rug weaving design.
This beautiful example, dating to the beginning of the 20th century, has a remarkable tight weave which lends a crisp clarity to its drawing. The monochrome overall design of the central field is inspired by earlier 15th century weavings of the city of Herat, also known as the ‘mahi’ or fish design, and gives the carpet a balanced feel, framed by a wide artistic border of great proportions.
This antique Tabriz carpet is in very good to excellent condition, with gracefully aged vegetable dyed colours.
A truly wonderful example and one of the finest we have had the pleasure of acquiring. Rare in this large format.
