Object Description

A large scale antique Tudor / Jacobean revival oak wall panel carved with the date ‘1868’ among various floral and geometric carved panels. This stunning period oak panel was reclaimed from Wingfield Castle, Suffolk. More than 150 years old, this spectacular panel is a captured piece of English history. It could be simply mounted on an interior wall as a statement decorative piece or alternatively repurposed as a unique headboard or overmantel.

Provenance

A fortified private manor house, Wingfield Castle was the ancestral home of the Wingfield family and their heirs, the de la Pole family. During the reign of King Henry VII (1485-1509), the castle passed to the crown and was given to Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, who would later go on to marry Mary Tudor, sister to King Henry VIII. Over the next few centuries, the castle would pass through five further families including the Catlin family before Lord Bemers sold the property to the Adair family in 1886.

Object Condition

Good structural condition. Wax finish. Rich dark oak patina. A couple of strengthening brackets to the back. Small losses, scuffs and marks.
