Object Description

Large Belgian silver gilt vase, 19th century
Belgian, 19th Century
Height 36cm, width 52cm, depth 39cm

This superb vase is crafted from shining silver gilt. Of rounded campagna form, the composition is richly decorated with applied foliate designs.

Standing on a circular base, both the splayed foot and fluted lower body are decorated with chased alternating palm and acanthus leaf designs. A beaded border connects the two, whilst the upper and lower sections of the main body are connected by an applied ropework border. The upper body is applied with further acanthus and palm designs, here in a scrolling motif punctuated by rosette foliage. Separating this continuous design are four identical monograms, which sit underneath marquess coronets that add a magisterial touch to the piece. Further beading surmounts the lip.

Twin serpent handles are applied to each side of the vase, comprising two intertwining snakes. These elements are particularly finely applied, and display skilful carving in the scales of the animals.

A copper inset sits inside of the vase. A Belgian fineness mark, as well as an unidentified maker’s mark and a French Weevil import stamp, can be seen on the base.

This Belgian piece is a fine decorative ware, that would be sure to add a touch of luxury to any interior.

Silver weight excluding liner: approx. 6500 grammes.
