Object Description
Large c. 1890 Ziegler Mahal Carpet
6.93 x 5.21 m
Ziegler Mahal carpets were originally commissioned in Persia for the Western market during the late 19th Century, to complement Western furnishing tastes, quickly becoming popular across the UK and Europe, thanks to their unique, grand scale drawings, quiet formality, and understated colours, which continue to make them sought-after additions to modern homes today, thanks to their ability to unite both classic and contemporary design elements in a room.
This 19th Century Ziegler Mahal carpet, finely woven in lustrous wool, and with gracefully aged vegetable dyes, features an elegantly balanced palette, with a muted terracotta ground, and duck egg blue, ochre, ocean green and ivory tones in the drawing. The artist has opted for a bold, open composition, with a light sage green border of generous proportions working to frame the grand-scale floral designs in the central field.
Preserved in very good condition for everyday use, especially considering its age, still retaining its outer borders and short fringes on both sides.
A highly desirable decorative piece, rare in this large format – truly one of the finest of its type we have had the pleasure of acquiring – with the versatility to complement a wide variety of settings.
