Object Description
Large c. 1900 Tabriz Carpet
6.68 x 3.61 m
The city of Tabriz in Northwest Persia has long been known as a major centre of fine rug weaving, with a tradition stretching back at least as far as the 14th Century. Antique Tabriz carpets are distinguished by their tight weaves and remarkable adherence to the traditions of Classical Persian rug weaving design.
This antique example, dating to c. 1900, features a muted tan colour ground, which, as a result of the natural colour of the wool, and the vegetable dyes used, has a wonderfully subtle variation in tone across the field, lending the work a real sense of depth and character. The carpet also employs an unusually simple design, giving it an open, spacious feel, well complimented by the border, intricately decorated in pale sky blue and pastel hues, and of grand proportions.
A beautiful piece, and of a rare and impressively large format, retained in very good practical condition for everyday use, with an effortless elegance that would compliment a wide variety of interiors.
