Heriz carpets represent some of the most desirable Persian carpets today, best known for the unique artistry of their designs – woven in Persia’s mountainous North-West, these pieces incorporate many of the bold, geometric motifs usually seen in Caucasian rugs, rather than the complex floral patterns common to more traditional Persian carpets, though with the same high-quality weaves, clarity of their drawing, and deep vegetable dyes, giving them the versatility to suit either a classic or contemporary space.
This example represents a contemporary interpretation of these pieces, handwoven in lustrous wool, featuring simplified design characteristics of high-end 19th Century Serapi-Heriz weavings. It employs a restrained, monochrome colour palette, with a soft slate-grey field framed by a wide, ivory border, and with accents in charcoal and taupe, well suited to this carpet’s elegant, all-over drawing – a balanced, open composition, which lends the work a modern aesthetic sensibility.
