Object Description
A large, polychromatic, Greek, Daunian terracotta olla . The vessel features a large, globular body that leads to the typical broad, funnel-shaped rim. The rounded body is decorated with geometric motifs in a rich orange and deep brown. Towards the rim are two large lines, one in each colour. Underneath, decorating the middle of the body is a brown, rectangular register, divided into sections and decorated with orange patterns. Some of the patterns include vertical striations, whilst others include a checkerboard motif. An undulating brown line borders the register and another two lines of colour, echoing the top of the bowl, decorate the base. The vessels rests on a flat base. Two painted arched handles arise from the centre of the body. At right angles to the handles, there are two stylised, zoomorphic protomes on each side, resembling an animal’s head. They are covered mostly in orange pigment, with two round eyes coloured in dark brown. Within the vessel’s large mouth there is further decoration. Three lines of alternating brown and orange decorate the area closest to the neck, increasing in size as they expand outwards towards the lip. Large semi-circular motifs decorate the final section of the mouth, also painted brown.
