Object Description
Large Empire-style ormolu and malachite centre table
French, 20th Century
Height 85cm, width 165.5cm, depth 85.5cm
This superb centre table pairs vibrant malachite with classical ormolu mounts. The malachite tabletop sits atop a recessed malachite apron adorned with palmette gilt-bronze friezes. Similar frieze decoration is applied to the two square profile malachite supports, which are also applied with ormolu torches.
The tabletop also stands on four caryatid gilt-bronze supports, which face outwards. The supports sit on top of an H-form malachite stretcher, which is centred by a large twin-handled ormolu krater adorned with masks, floral designs, and a frieze of dancing figures. The krater is flanked by two ormolu sphinxes.
Replete with fine ormolu mounts in the neoclassical style, this impressive table would be a stand-out piece within the appropriate interior.
