Object Description

A large mahogany Camp Table which extends to double in size.

The Camp Table was a very practical piece of furniture, used both by army officers and domestically. It folds on its square section X-frame legs for easy storage when not in use but can be quickly set up to provide an extra table when needed. The top is hinged and has an inset brass plate to receive a screw in leg to support it when unfolded. The Butler’s tray is then placed above the X-frame legs to cover the space vacated by the top.

Like most Camp Tables, the leg is a replacement, and the tray although period is not original to the table. It is a touch small for the space but given the oversized nature of the table, it is remarkable to find one that works with it. As both pieces are separate it is common for them to be lost over time. The construction of the table is very strong with the square section to the X-frame legs wider than you would expect. This is carried through to the stretchers etc.

This is a versatile piece of furniture and works well as a side table for drinks with the tray sat on top or extended to give a much larger serving area. It can be easily moved from one room to another or taken outside for a garden party. When folded, a replaced leather belt strap holds the extra leg and prevents the table from unfolding. Early 19th Century.

The shorter size with out the tray is given in the dimensions but when extended the width is 70 1/4 inches (178.5 cm)

Object Condition

Good. The leg is replaced and the tray is period but not original to the table. Leather belt strap replaced.
