Object Description
Large French gilt and patinated bronze chandelier
French, 20th Century
Height 240cm, diameter 190cm
This striking chandelier captures the refined grace of the Belle Époque era. Emerging in France at the close of the 19th century, the Belle Époque period celebrated both innovation and tradition, marrying classical artistry with the technological advancements of its time. This chandelier from Mayfair Gallery’s collection is a superb example of that union, showcasing expert craftsmanship and enduring beauty.
The chandelier’s frame is formed from gilt and patinated bronze, masterfully worked to highlight contrasting textures and tones. Its central column is embellished with multiple tiers of intricate reliefs, depicting both naturalistic and decorative motifs. The warm, golden glow of the gilt bronze is subtly offset by the darker patinated sections, producing a sophisticated interplay of light and colour.
Graceful, curving glass arms extend outward from each tier, ending in finely detailed ormolu bobeches. These support delicate tulip-shaped glass shades, which diffuse the light with a gentle shimmer. When illuminated, the chandelier radiates a soft brilliance that enhances its sculptural form and fine detailing.
Grand in scale and rich in ornamentation, this antique chandelier would make an impressive centrepiece in a period interior or contemporary setting alike. It stands as a testament to the elegance and artistic excellence of French design during one of its most glamorous eras.
