Object Description
Large French Rococo Revival style giltwood sofa
French, Late 19th Century
Height 135cm, width 196cm, depth 90cm
This remarkable piece is a large, French, Rococo revival carved giltwood sofa made in the late nineteenth century, featuring an excellent combination of rich blue upholstery and lavish carved gilt decorations.
The frames are extensively carved with scrolling acanthus foliage. There is an abundance of ribbon-tied fruiting set amongst foliate swags, and other decorative elements include opposing pairs of foliate wrapped birds. There are cabochons, so-called ‘Green Man’ masks, beaded pendants and gadrooning.
The arcing back of the sofa features curved winged ends and the toprail is crowned with a central cartouche cresting. The piece is set upon squat cabriole front legs, and it has splayed square section legs to the back. A luxurious and ornate work, it speaks to antique style, sophistication, and relaxation.
