Large German Orientalist oil painting of horse riders by Schreyer
German, Late 19th Century
Canvas: Height 59cm, width 96cm
Frame: Height 85cm, width 122cm, depth 8cm

This outstanding late 19th century painting is the work of Adolf Schreyer (1828–1899), one of Germany’s most distinguished Orientalist artists. Renowned for merging meticulous realism with emerging impressionistic techniques, Schreyer honed his craft in Frankfurt, Stuttgart, and Munich. His evocative depictions of military and equestrian subjects brought him international acclaim, with prestigious collectors such as the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers supporting him.

The scene depicted in this painting captures a striking moment of tension and movement. A group of distinguished Arab riders has suddenly come to a stop, their leader—mounted on a rearing horse—gesturing powerfully into the distance. Schreyer masterfully highlights the commander’s significance through an expert interplay of light and colour.

Around him, armed soldiers on horseback focus their attention ahead, reinforcing the painting’s strong equestrian theme. The Arabian horses are depicted with superb anatomical accuracy, their musculature and movement rendered in detail. Having been a skilled rider himself, Schreyer possessed an understanding of horse anatomy, which translated into the lifelike quality of his depictions.

The artist’s use of atmospheric elements enhances the painting’s drama. The sky, heavy with swirling clouds, imbues the scene with a sense of anticipation, while the textured, rugged terrain—painted in earthy hues of green and brown—adds depth and an air of remoteness. Schreyer’s fluid brushwork further intensifies the energy of the composition, drawing the viewer into the unfolding narrative.

Encased in an elegant giltwood frame, this remarkable artwork bears the artist’s signature, ‘Ad. Schreyer’ in the lower right corner.

A true celebration of equestrian artistry, this grand and evocative painting is a superb addition to any collection, particularly for those with an appreciation for fine Orientalist works or the noble beauty of horses.
