Object Description
Large Italian marble sculpture by Pietro Bazzanti
Italian, late 19th Century
Height 105cm, width 45cm, depth 40cm
The present sculpture, carved from brilliant white marble, depicts a young boy standing on a rocky, naturalistically formed integral base. The boy stands in classicising contrapposto, his serene and determined face gazing into the distance. He holds, in his right hand that is braced against his hip, a water bottle. His garments are loosely fitting and wonderfully rendered: indeed, the entire sculpture is texturally sophisticated, ranging from the ragged hair to the smooth skin and well-worn clothes. The piece is the work of Pietro Bazzanti, one of the leading sculptors in marble working in Italy in the latter 19th Century.
The circular base is signed “P. Bazzanti / Florence”.
