Italian, Late 19th Century

Frame: Height 94cm, width 132cm, depth 10cm
This beautiful Italian figurative landscape is by the Italian artist Pietro Gabrini (1856-1926). Known for his superb handling of light and colour, this painting is a fine example of the artist’s accomplished work.
The work depicts two women punting across the waters outside of Venice, seen in casual conversation. One figure moves the boat along using a punting stick, whilst the other reclines. The reclining woman rests against a host of different crops, perhaps suggesting that these women have just bought, or have been selling these items. Venice itself can glimpsed on the right-hand horizon, conveying the tranquil solitude of the women as they go about their journey.
The painting is executed in a realistic style. As is the artist’s signature, the handling of light and colour is particularly impressive: the bright colours of the clothing and vegetables stand out against the dusky sky, whilst the variegation of the blue waters effectively gives a sense of light and shadow.
Ensconced in a carved giltwood frame, the painting is signed ‘P. Gabrini, Roma’ to the canvas, and inscribed ‘On the Lagoons, Venice / P. Gabrini’ to the frame. The reverse of the frame also features a worn dealer’s mark.
Casting a beautiful vignette of 19th century Venice, this charming work is a highly collectible piece of art.
