Originating from the early 20th Century, this expansive Persian rug is an embodiment of magnificent craftsmanship.
Handwoven using the finest wool, dyed naturally with vegetable colours, it showcases a classic pattern found in prayer rugs. A fusion of Islamic-style architectural elements and oriental motifs, it features a central panel design often found in prayer rugs – a construction with two pairs of columns, each partially hidden behind the border frame, supporting a captivating triple arch. Nestled between these pairs of columns, an ornate chandelier and a sizable vase, both teeming with sculpted flowers, make a striking impression. Symmetrically arranged pairs of birds enhance the visual appeal of the tableau.
In the middle of both double columns, the rug features tall cypress motifs, offering a directional characteristic typical of prayer rugs. Each cypress motif is further embellished with a series of designs – a sprinkling of tiny flowers, palmette patterns, a bird on the verge of flight, and a traditional boteh design.
All elements of the central panel, woven in varying shades of beige, yellow, pale blue, and navy, pop against a vibrant red backdrop, contributing to the rug’s lavish aesthetic. In contrast to the bold central designs, the border is a serene space, rich with intricate floral patterns against a background of sky blue. The delicate hues of the flowers – shades of pink, carmine, and blue – provide a visually pleasing contrast. The frame includes seven friezes of varying widths composed mostly of delicate small flowers, with the larger frieze, also displaying architectural floral stylised motifs, such as palmettes.
