Object Description
Large landscape watercolour of Mont Blanc by Arthur Croft
British, 1872
Frame: Height 64cm, width 117cm, depth 3cm
Sheet: Height 53cm, width 108cm
This quite beautiful and exceptionally large watercolour depicts a late evening scene from the Alps: Mont Blanc looms to the left, and beneath it, and other surrounding peaks, a glacier slowly flows. The time of day has flushed the sky a spectrum of sunset colours, and the light has tinted the peaks pink and, in contrast, highlighted the icy blueness of the glacier. The work is deftly painted and is a superb example of its artist’s output: Arthur Croft was a prolific watercolourist and traveller during the late Victorian period, and he has been celebrated since his own day for his beautiful—and daring—paintings.
The work is contained by a giltwood frame and is signed and dated lower left ‘Arthur Croft 1872’.
