Object Description
Large Neoclassical style giltwood torchère
French, late 19th Century
Height 170cm, diameter 52cm
This fine and large Neoclassical style torchère is crafted from delicately carved and gilt wood. The torchère is raised on a tripod base comprised of three pierced and scrolled legs. The feet, base, and central column of the torchère are richly adorned with carved detailing—foliate motifs abound, with acanthus leaves and other classicising forms evident throughout. The central column culminates in a single, widely flared candle holder. The piece is a superb example of the Neoclassical Louis XVI style.
