Object Description
Large pair of Chinese floral Cloisonné enamel vases on stands
Chinese, 20th Century
Height 120cm, diameter 50cm
Crafted in 20th century China, this pair of vases showcases the skills of Chinese artists.
The vases are identical in form, and the designs are mirrored. Of baluster form, with flared feet and necks, the main bodies are large and ovoid. The foot features a gilded rim. The entirety of each vase is decorated with extensive cloisonné enamelling, a complex technique whereby metal partitions (‘cloisons’) on the object’s surface are filled in with vitreous enamel. The cloisons then come together to create beautiful designs, with floral and animal imagery predominant in Chinese works from this period.
The bodies are adorned with bird and flower compositions extending all around the vases. Traditional flowers such as chrysanthemums are included imbuing the pieces with important symbolic meanings. The neck and feet are adorned with bands in a more stylised manner. Scrolling and geometric forms are interspersed with pairs of abstract dragons.
Each vase stands on a stepped circular wooden base, carved with an openwork foliate design and set on shaped feet.
With their outstanding execution and vivid colouring, these Chinese vases are exceptional cloisonné enamel wares.
