Object Description
Large patinated bronze Japanese koro incense burner
Japanese, late 19th Century
Dimensions: Height 221cm, width 97cm, depth 57cm
This monumental koro is modelled from patinated bronze as an ovoid bowl surmounted with a tiered and pierced lid set above a stem comprised of a writhing dragon and crashing waves, all supported on an integral shaped base.
This patinated bronze koro was crafted during a time of great industrial competition between the East and West. In the Meiji period, Japan applied traditional technology to works of art for export to Western countries. Pieces such as this incense burner were made for the great European and American international exhibitions, where they won great acclaim.
