Object Description
Large quartz crystal, pyrite and vermeil model of an eagle attributed to Asprey
Swiss, c. 1975
Height 62cm, width 81cm, depth 48cm
Attributed to the celebrated and well-known Asprey firm, the sculpture depicts a majestic eagle about to take off from the rocky base. Asprey is known for their high quality jewellery and decorative objects, often crafting pieces for royalty and an elite clientele.
The bird’s body is covered with quartz crystal, creating the appearance of ruffled feathers. The largest crystal pieces are placed on the wings, their size decreasing towards the tail. Vermeil (also known as silver-gilt) is used to craft the feet and head which brilliantly showcase the bird’s anatomical features such as claws and tongue. The outer parts of the eagle’s wings are covered with numerous vermeil panels, from under which appear delicate pieces of pyrite. Quartz crystal is believed to enhance spirituality while pyrite is said to bring good luck, filling this sculpture with further spiritual meaning.
Supporting the sculpture is a prominent rocky base filled with numerous pyrite inclusions.
Of a very impressive size and design, this sculpture would be a wonderful home décor piece.
