Object Description

A large Ancient Roman iron horse spur from the Germanic region featuring a prick to the neck and stud terminals. The spur features a slightly distort U-shaped body which tapers in towards the protruding stud terminals. These would have allowed for the spur to be attached to the rider’s shoe/boot. The neck is adorned with a single prick stud attachment with ribbing at the base. This spur would have been used across all regions of the Roman Empire and Germanic areas, attached to the heel of the rider’s boot in warfare.

Date: Circa 2nd-3rd century AD
