A Large mid 19th Century Walnut Treen Master Table Salt.
English Circa 1850.
Of excellent patina and colour the bowl having an everted rim on a short turned stem and large moulded circular raised base.
In excellent condition this imposing treen master salt would have an important part of most 19th century banquets.
Treen is a generic name for small handmade functional household objects other than furniture, made of wood and now very collectible. The term treen comes from an Old English word which actually means turned, referring to the rotating lathe which craftsmen used to shape the objects.
