Object Description

A late 18th century (circa 1790) extremely rare walnut Italian sofa or canape of Neoclassical design retaining some of the original polychrome paint finish.

The sofa consists of a top rail finely carved with three medallions with carved foliate decoration leading down to the upholstered back.

This leads down to the arm supports consisting of foliate carved decoration, the arm supports having evidence of some of the original polychrome paint.

The arm support to the front has a carved roundel and is supported by a carved Classical female figure leading down to Neoclassical carved decoration.

This leads down to the front rail which is fluted with a central carved panel also with Neoclassical carved designs within a rectangular frame, the side rails also being fluted.

This leads down to the legs, all being slightly splay in design, the front legs terminating with original gilt carved paw feet.

The sofa frame is in very good original condition for age and is upholstered in a blue fabric – a sample of this fabric can be sent on request.

Photos are also available of the sofa before being re-upholstered on request.

Rare pieces such as this sofa, of this age, quality and original condition are rarely found on the open market.

This sofa is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home or collection.
