Object Description

A late 19th century Black Forest carved linden wood centre table with tri-form base.

This table consists of a profusely carved naturalistic circular top with floral and foliate decoration including oak leaves and acorns, roses, edelweiss, vine leaves and grapes with a carved edge and shaped and carved frieze.

This leads down to the branch or trunk style column with carved vine leaf and grape decoration all supported on a tri-form base with three carved scrolling legs with carved oak leaf designs.

The small village of Brienz in The Swiss Alps is particularly known for superbly and finely carved linden wood figures as well as many other types of carved items including furniture.
The region was known for producing superbly naturalistic and realistic pieces with the wonderful depiction of flowers and foliage, trees, fur, feathers etc. carved from lime or linden wood. The furniture was not all typically ‘Black Forest’ in style but was also influenced by the Renaissance, Rococo and even Art Nouveau but whatever the style the emphasis was always on carved surfaces which is certainly the case with this superbly decorative table.

This table is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
