Object Description

Ca. 3rd-1st century BC

A Late Hellenistic red jasper intaglio with an intricately engraved left-facing bust of a goddess, set in the oval-shaped, flat bezel of a possibly later gold ring. The goddess raises her right hand, pointing her index finger as if imparting a lesson or offering guidance. The artist skillfully captured the essence of the goddess through naturalistic renderings, emphasizing her attentive, large eyes, aquiline nose, broad lips, and pointed chin. Her hair is meticulously arranged into a captivating coiffure, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal. The ring is comprised of a thin loop with a rounded exterior and flat interior. It has imposing, square shoulders and is similar to Boardman type XVII (CGFR, Fig. 197).
