Object Description

An fine example of an early French one-piece strike repeat alarm carriage clock by the very well known clockmakers and retailers of exceptional quality, Leroy & Fils.

The 8-day movement strikes on the hour and half hour with alarm and hour repeat function. It is engraved with the retailers name Leroy & Fils and with the Drocourt stamp. Pierre & Alfred Drocourt were France’s leading makers from the middle of the 19th century through to the late Victorian era. Both movement and key and stamped with the numbers 10701 and 13445.

The early one-piece gilded brass case has a large glazed top, repeat button and bevelled glass panels to all sides, all in perfect condition.

The white enamel dial is signed for Leroy & Fils who were in business at 13-15 Palais Royal in Paris , France, and it also has their London address at 211 Regent Street.

Object History

Pierre & Alfred Drocourt were one of the top maker’s of carriage clocks in the mid to late Victorian period, having a factory at Saint-Nicolas-d’Ailermont, the most important town for carriage clock manufacture at the time as well as premises in Paris at Rue Debelleyme 28 and Rue de Limoges. They made superb carriage clocks which were mainly decorative and were awarded numerous medals at exhibitions, such as the Bronze Medal at Paris 1867, the Silver at Paris 1878 and the gold at Paris in 1889. The son, Alfred, succeeded his father Pierre sometime in the 1870’s.

Object Condition

Overhauled and guaranteed for 3 years. Complete with the original brown leather carrying case, also in excellent condition.
