Object Description

A leather Fire Bucket.

The Bucket is made in the standard manner with copper rivets joining the base and fixing the side seam. The top edge has a copper band which is also riveted in place. The bottom of the bucket has been stamped ‘Tilley’.

The name Tilley might refer to the house it was made for or possible the leatherworker. There is a Tilley Manor House in West Harptree, Somerset that was built in 1659 and a Tilley Manor in the hamlet of Tilley, North Shropshire.

The leather has obviously been too close to a fire at some stage in its history as the leather has wrinkled in parts. The bucket has also developed a wonderful shape perhaps also due to the heat. Mid 19th Century.

The height given is to the top edge.

Object Condition

Good. Some wrinkling from heat but it is not unsightly.
