Object Description

This fine and ornate antique clock set by Lemerle-Charpentier & Compagnie comprises a clock and two flanking candelabra. The asymmetrical clock is set on a red marble base with ormolu feet and features a central relief panel in patinated bronze. The circular red marble clock face displays the time in ormolu Roman numerals and hands and is framed within an ormolu laurel leaf border. The clock face is set on a patinated bronze fluted column that is ornamented with gilt bronze foliage. Next to the clock stands a full length figure of the Roman goddess Diana (Greek name Artemis), holding a torch with flame and a quiver. The pair of flanking candelabra have ovoid-form supports decorated with bronze reliefs, similar to the clock panel, surmounted by curled branches and seven patinated bronze lights ornamented with ormolu drip pans.

Lemerle-Charpentier & Compagnie operated in Paris between around 1870 and 1890. They exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1878, where they received a Gold Medal and were highly acclaimed by exhibition journalists. They are best known for their prestigious gilt-bronze mantle clocks and garnitures.
