Object Description

A striking clock, in more than one sense. Visually, to my mind this is the most beautiful of those produced from the Lenzkirch factory in the last quarter of the 19th Century.

Lenzkirch had substantial factories in Badenia in the Black Forest region of Germany and, at their peak in around 1900 were producing around 60 clocks per day with over 600 employees.

The company produced some beautiful clocks of superb quality, and this one is a fine example.

The case is veneered in beautifully figured burr walnut, decorated with well cast ormolu mounts. The top is carved to the front elevation, and is surmounted with four flambeau finials. Both front and rear doors are key-locked. The sides have lovely sound frets, backed with navy silk.

The arched dial’s silvered chapter ring has a matted brass centre, surrounded with brass spandrels and a separate rise and fall regulation dial in the arch.

The 8 day clock movement is of high quality craftsmanship and strikes the quarter hours on two blued steel gongs and the hour on a single gong. The backplate is stamped with the maker’s mark and serial number.
