Although not a direct copy, the present work combines elements from the illustrations in Walter Crane’s Queen Summer or The Tourney of the Lily & the Rose, first published by Cassell & Co in 1891. Crane’s work was greatly admired in Belgium and he is considered a precursor of the Belgium Art Nouveau movement of architecture and design which first developed in Brussels in the early 1890s.

Born in Tournai, Lionel Jean Baptiste Etienne Alfred Ghislain Durieu was the son of an eminent Belgian photographer. He worked as an artist and photographer.
