Object Description

A stunning Art Deco Louis Vuitton leather ladies dressing case with original tortoiseshell and cut crystal fittings. The case and fittings are in excellent condition and the natural leather hide of the exterior is superb and untouched, having been protected by it’s leather trimmed canvas foul weather cover. The interior of the case is lined in brown Morocco leather with pockets for, amongst other things, the tortoiseshell hair and clothes brushes, the vanity mirror, shoe horn and glove stretcher. The internal fittings include six cut crystal containers with silver gilt mounts stamped with LV’s makers mark but also bearing British import marks for 1925 and stamped GS for George Stockwell, Stockwell & Co Ltd, an importer active as foreign and general shipping agent.

Object History

Similar examples of this type of case are shown in a contemporary Louis Vuitton illustration in Henry L Vuitton’s book, “A Trunk Full of Memories”.

Louis Vuitton was founded by its namesake in 1854, with the first shop on Rue Neuve des Capucines in Paris, France. Monsieur Vuitton had observed that a competitor’s trunk could be easily stacked and in 1858, Vuitton introduced his flat-topped trunks with trianon canvas covering, making them lightweight and airtight. Before this time, rounded-top trunks were generally used, to help water run off, and thus could not be stacked. Vuitton promoted his flat trunks ability to stack with ease for overseas voyages and thus created a successful luxury travel goods business.
