Object Description

A Fine Louis XVI Style Gilt-Bronze Mounted Double Bed.

Stamped ‘KOHL’ to reverse of bronze mount to top left hand corner of the back board for the Parisian ébéniste Fernand Kohl.

This fine double bed has a rectangular headboard with a shaped cornice above a frieze with finely cast, gilt-bronze vitruvian scroll decoration below is three quarter veneered panels framed by gilt-bronze and flanked by uprights headed by gilt-bronze trailing bell husks.

The foot board incorporates similar decoration and is further enhanced by a finely cast, entwined gilt-bronze ribbon to the apron and anthemion mounts to the uprights above turned toupie feet.

Object History

Fernand Kohl was situated at 55 Rue Traversiere, Paris and exhibited at the 1889 Paris Exhibition Universelle, where he was awarded a medal. He was particularly known for executing exceptional furniture in the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles using rich mahogany and rosewood veneers and fine gilt-bronze mounts.

Examples of Fernand Kohl’s work can be found in the French National Collection at the musée d’Orsay, Paris, France.
