Object Description

A large and very impressive Doulton Lambeth Aesthetic Movement Art Pottery vase decorated with large flowering buds by renowned designer and decorator Louisa J Davis in collaboration with renowned artist Eliza L Hubert dated 1881. Louisa J Davis was particularly renowned for her designs which were based on conventionalized flower and leaf designs and this is certainly one of the best we have seen. The stoneware vase of tall cylindrical shape stands on a round pedestal shaped foot with a narrow slightly splayed neck and raised edged rim. The body of the vase is extensively and well decorated with stylized leaf patterns set within raised beaded borders set below above and below floret borders to the lower and upper body. A large central band is decorated with a carved continuous pattern of flowering buds on leafy stems painted in tones of blue, green and brown against a seed patterned textured salt glazed ground. The upper and lower body is similarly painted with white raised beading and a band of florets are applied around the top rim. The vase bears an impressed Doulton Lambeth mark with the date 1881 and is numbered 896. The vase has incised monograms for Louisa J Davis and Eliza L Hubert.
